Remembering Sadaputa (Richard L. Thompson)

Tomorrow marks one year since the passing of His Grace Sadaputa Prabhu. To honor this occasion I have decided to share some of my memories of him.

sd

About 10 years ago, after finishing my master’s degree in astrophysics, I took a gap-year and travelled. While backpacking around the world that year, I discovered Prabhupada’s books and I soon began to associate with devotees. The devotees would usually, upon discovering my scientific background, tell me about Sadaputa Prabhu, and guide me to his books. This happened practically everywhere I went. “What do you do?” the devotee would ask. “Oh, I am a scientist“ I would reply. The next line, usually spoken very enthusiastically, always went something like “Did you know we have this great scientist in ISKCON called Sadaputa dasa, Richard L. Thompson? You should read his book Mechanistic and Non-Mechanistic Science , or Vedic Cosmography and Astronomy.” I could see that devotees all over the world were very proud of their ISKCON scientist, so I thought I had better check him out. I bought a copy of his Vedic Cosmography book somewhere on my travels and began to read.

I was impressed by the book. It was clear to me that Sadaputa Prabhu was a good mathematician and scientist, and his book certainly increased my interest in reading the Srimad Bhagavatam. I tried to contact him by email to ask if I could correspond with him, but unfortunately received no reply.

I had to wait a few more years before I would meet this great ISKCON scientist. It happened after I became involved in research work for the Temple of the Vedic Planetarium (TOVP). In early 2004 I met Pancharatna Prabhu who invited me to get involved in the project. At that time there was no official research group for the Vedic Planetarium. There had been earlier efforts, mainly by Sadaputa Prabhu, which resulted in his book on Vedic cosmography and later his Mysteries of the Sacred Universe, but, after the management and finances for the TOVP project collapsed in the late 90s, there was no organized research going on. I could see from the beginning that this was a huge subject area to research, and that it was not a one man (or one woman) job. I began to contact various qualified ISKCON scholars I knew for their advice. Sadaputa Prabhu was an obvious choice. He replied enthusiastically – he was keen to contribute. I could tell even from the beginning that the TOVP project was very important to him; not as an academic exercise, more like a life-mission; not for his own intellectual prestige, but for the pleasure of his spiritual master, Srila Prabhupada.

I drew up a list of research goals and objectives for the Vedic Planetarium research project, then Ravindra Svarupa Prabhu was recruited as the Project Leader and together we invited Sadaputa Prabhu and others to form a research committee. In the beginning I only knew Sadaputa through his emails.

I finally met Sadaputa in person when the research committee first met in 2006 in Gainesville. My first impression was that he was gentle and humble – quite a rare thing for a scientist. He was also funny. When Brahmatirtha Prabhu introduced him as Sadaputa, he added with a smile “or Sada-Putana as the local gurukulis call me.” During the meetings, it was interesting for me to see how he would approach each subject with his own unique perspective. He would analyse the issues with extreme concentration, and present relevant observations that came from a fresh and often unexpected angle. Practically everything he spoke was deep and profound, spoken with such concentration and intensity . I lost count of how many times I heard Ravindra Svarupa Prabhu use the words “wow” and “far out” in those meetings. There was certainly something very mysterious and sage-like about Sadaputa Prabhu, but at the same time something very human and likable. He was extremely broad minded, but not arrogant as some/many scientists can be.

During the meetings, he contributed from his years of experience and knowledge and helped to refine the research plan. After that we continued to exchange emails on subjects such as the problems of geocentrism, relativity, interpretations of the Fifth Canto and Puranic cosmology in general.

I was fortunate to meet Sadaputa again in December 2007 at the ISKCON Academy of Arts and Sciences Conference in New Vrindaban, where he gave a presentation entitled “Interpretation and the Srimad Bhagavatam.” He gave insights into sections of the Bhagavatam based on his scientific background. He used the calculation of time from the atom (3rd Canto) as one example, and Bhumandala (5th Canto) as another.

At the end of the conference session in which he spoke, I went over to talk with him and he showed me the calculation he had been making during the talk that followed his. He had scribbled it on a napkin in typical scientist fashion. I don´t remember the exact calculation now, but it was connected with the size of the paramanu. Here are a couple of photos of that discussion – he is holding his scribbled calculation in hand.

I was planning to meet with Sadaputa Prabhu again in Gainesville last October, but sadly he passed away shortly before that. It was a great shock for me to hear of his passing. I am certainly missing him and his brilliant insights.

Sadaputa was one of Prabhupada’s very few scientist disciples. He was a true pioneer and I expect that, 10, 50, or 100 years from now, devotees in ISKCON will look back and realize, more than we do now, the value and importance of the foundation he laid for the scientific presentation of Krishna consciousness.

Thank you for writing something Prabhu. I am not a scientist, but nevertheless Sadaputa held a special place in my heart. I really never had any discourse with him per se, but I read some of his writings here and there and was always in awe of his level of understanding and intelligence. As you say I was proud to have such a qualified god brother as he, and would sometimes direct other people to his books in preaching. I often thought how cool it would be to have an intimate darshan with him someday and pick his brain for explanations of some of the worlds great phenomenons and how they could be explained from a Krsna conscious perspective or from the perspective of a qualified devotee scientist. Sadly that will never come to pass in this life. But I admire him for all the abilities that he dovetailed in the service of this great movement and for all of his accomplishments and contributions in the areas that he was most expert and profound in. I miss him and feel his separation even though I hardly new him at all. He was a great personality. May Krsna and Srila Prabhupada eternally bless him.

Thank you Carana Renu Mataji for that memory. I just downloaded all of Sadaputa Prabhu’s lectures. He has such brilliant spiritual intelligence and as you pointed out, both humble and humerous.

Indeed His Grace Sadaputa Prabhu was an inspiration to us all. Srila Prabhupada called him, “a very good hare krishna man.” I recalled some years ago speaking with him in confidence where he took great care in helping me along in Krishna consciousness. I consider it an honor to have met this Vaisnava.

Hare Krishna. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and his sciebtific followers.

I have been also very much inspired by Sadaputa Prabhu. I have read the all available books of BI, though I have dropped the idea of myself doing scientific preaching due to discovering a more urgent area (psychology and therapy for new devotees).

However, there’s one point I want to share with all of you - maybe you can use it?

Thinking about the different models of Universe, it dawned to me one day that perhaps we could prove the Vedic one scientifically. In my school years I learned about Michelson–Morley experimen which seemingly proved against the ether hypothesis. Then they deducted the point about the absolute value of the speed of light, etc.

Now, in my understanding the experiment was simply made ‘unclean’ as scientists here would say. The assumption was, that the Earth is orbiting around Sun at such-and-such speed, and they measured the speed of light in two perpendicular directions. But the Vedas say that the Earth is stationary! Of COURSE the measured speed of light was to be equal in both directions…

To check it out we need to do the same experiment again, but do it in a portable laboratory MOVING IN REGARDS TO EARTH.

I told this thought about 10 years ago to my then Godbrother, Airavata Prabhu, a devotee scientist originally from Baku, Azerbaijan, but seems he never used it. Perhaps you have the courage?

It would really be fun if the modified experiment gave the results I expect! Many of the modern mathematic models would suffer. :-)

Vedic Cosmography rulez!

P.S. If you want to know, why I didn’t promote the thing myself, just read about people like me in the homepage http://www.loporto.com, and you’ll understand. :)

Dear Carana Renu,

My obesiances. Jai Prabhupada !

Thank you very much for starting this site with regards to my brilliant godbrother, His Grace Sadaputa prabhu.

I had previously read in the later 70s that Srila had stated that ” our most important preeaching was to the scientists| , due to their very influential position in the world. In the 80s I started up three university clubs at York Unviersity, University of Toronto and Mc Master university in Hamilton. I called them the Vedic Cultural Society and offered vegetarian cooking classes. Pancharatna prabhu and later Stambha prabhu and Radhanatha Maharaja were all inspirations for me to start these programs.

When Mechinistic and Non mechanistic Science came out, Krsna inspired me with the idea to invite Sadaputa prabhu to speak at the three universities. Each club had a limited amount of funding from the university, so I arranged for his air fare to be paid and he agreed to give a lecture at each campus.

At one ppint I proposed over the phone to Sadaputa prabhu to make a poster stating “Is Darwin Making a Monkey Out of You ? ” a title I got from a BTG article, with a half monkey body and Darwin face connected to it, and Sadaputa chastised me for threatening the seriousness of his upcoming presentations. I was really worried that I had blown it and that he might not come, but he still came after I reassured him that I would make the poster accoridn to his wishes.

Radhanatha Swami happened to arrive in Toronto at the same time, so I proposed the idea of having both of them on the same “bill” and they agreed. Sadaputa prabhu dressed in a suite and tie, with very faint tilac on, and Radhanatha maharaja in his traditional sanyassa garb.

I kicked myself later for not making some arrangement to film the discussion. DSadaputa prabhu used an overhead projector to make his points. I served out some beverage and light prasadam after the talk. Various professors came as well as studnbets in the free lecture halls that I booked. i felt that this was one of the most important servies I ever renderedt o Srila Prabhupada as well as one of his most dearmost servants.

Krsna Krpa prabhu did a lot of service for him, and he should be consulted. I believe he also transcribed many of his tapes as well.

I remember one time being in New vrndavana for one of the big festivals in the late 70s and Sadaputa was sitting outside with a group of devotees surrounding him as he spoke about dinosaurs from a previous Kali yuga, UFOs , the giant Roc birds that could pick up elephants, and many other fasicinating subject matters. Sadaputa prabhu was ISKCON’s Einstein !

i have also been a science student, and it was always a pleasure going through Sadaputa prabhus books. He was very much blessed by Srila Prabhupada and gifted by Sri Krishna, because the way he explained and used anecdotes it was very easy to understand the most complicated point he was making.

I met this great scientist, for the first time in 1977,in Lake Huttington Upstate New york. Dr.Thompson was spending his time after completing P.hD. in Math. from Cornel University, and was contemplating to go to Cambridge England.
My son was attending Gurukul there.I was regular member in I.S.K.Con. since 1972.
I was a practising M.D. Physician, in Cardiac Medicine in a border town Sranton Pennsylvania.
Needless to say, mutual admiration was instant and long lasting.
While the original scientific Vedic truths propounded by His Divine Grace I.S.K.Con. Founder Acharya, in his books, Tne great credit must belong to Sriman Sadputa Prabhu, for his unique distinction of further elaborating and explaining in cutting edge scientific lanfuage, yet making such abstract concepts in simple english that complex concepts have become tangible and understandable by every person. His Books are the basis of New theistic movement c alled “Intellegent Design”
Most of the arguments of such scientific tracts were being articulated by H.G. Sadputa Prabhu in late seventies, eighties nineties and beyond.
Present International G.B.C. and other leaders in I.S.K.Con. must start and launch Serious efforts to secure and preserve all his the published Books, Scientific papers, all his Videos and slides( that he had made to make his difficult acientific subjects, so much more easy to comprehend, by every follower of Srila Prabhu Pada fpr 10.000 years to come) They all must be preserved and protected and be available to future generations.
Many many happy and mutually rewarding years were spent between a Thiestic Physician and Thiestic Mathmatician Scientist.
May be more of us whose lives were touched by H.G. Sadaputa Prabhu, in his brief sojourn on this planet.

Sorry, computermalfunctioned.
Continuing from previous,
I will miss my dear most friend, dear most devotee, and dearmost Scientist, who enrihed me and my family to become so much more staunch and firmly convinced Krishna Conscious persons. Krishna permitting, I will start scholarship in his name in one of our I.S.K.Con. schools.
